The Sieff gallery is delighted to be able to bring together two contemporary artists in very different disciplines for this show in Soho: the American born painter Whitney McVeigh and the Belgian born Los Angeles based photographer Pascal Demeester. McVeigh is presenting new paintings from the “Heads Series” which are executed in acrylic on paper and canvas. Demeester is showing a selection of his conceptual series of photographs.

Whitney McVeigh’s work, which is figurative in nature, is by no means portraiture in the conventional sense. There are aspects of formal portraiture to her work, which indeed is her starting point, however they reveal a quality in which she searches for the invisible or hidden meanings in our lives. Her work captures the truth and frailty that exists within all of us, expressing what she calls “the internal landscape” through vibrant colour and distorted line. Like the sculpted heads of Elisabeth Frink, McVeigh’s “Heads” paintings allude to the tension between human frailty and the totemic qualities of the human image that are central to ancient and primitive art.

Pascal Demeester has taken his experience from years of creating classic images in the fashion and design world and many global campaigns and produced a series of often startling conceptual surrealistic images. Demeester has created challenging and visually stimulating images that encourage the viewer to become liberated and then interpret the scenes in his own way. With the use of objects and people Demeester is able to rid everyday landscapes of their utilitarian purpose and invites the viewer to make mental associations as desired.

Demeester uses his conscious as a receptor/selector to capture the surrealistic visions created by his subconscious, thus creating some startling and beautiful images.
